What good is it to invest in the IP if you're not even going to make it available to most consumers? The first game of that partnership was not even released outside of Japan. There are successful cases to be made for associating your IP to a platform owner. FF was doing fine until it was locked to Nintendo, then it went from being a small niche IP to being practically irrelevant for years and years.
