Not only the WiiU was already a dead platform by the time of it's release it was digital only on the US, and it needed an external drive to be playable if you did not own a WiiU Deluxe. Maiden of the Black Water was another big mess. I'm not even going to mention the 3DS thing. The second one, the remake of 2 was a great game and thankfully released WW, but it sold badly like many, many third party games on the Wii did, specially that far off into the console life when most people had already moved on.
What good is it to invest in the IP if you're not even going to make it available to most consumers? The first game of that partnership was not even released outside of Japan. There are successful cases to be made for associating your IP to a platform owner. FF was doing fine until it was locked to Nintendo, then it went from being a small niche IP to being practically irrelevant for years and years.
